No-till and living soil

No-till is not an isolated trick. It is part of a holistic system. Together with cover crop and organic nutrition, it creates a stable setup.

Living Soil Recipe

Mixing recipes based on standard potting soil. The quantities are adjusted for 50 L, 250 L and 500 L soil as the starting base.

For 50 L soil

Step-by-step guide

Mix the base

Mix soil, garden compost, worm castings, perlite and expanded clay thoroughly according to the selected recipe.

A careful mix distributes air, water and organic matter evenly throughout the substrate.

Work in SLS products

Spread Soil Vitalizer, Soil Recharger, Alfalfa Pellets and Wool Pellets evenly over the mix according to the recipe and work them in carefully.

Mix everything thoroughly once more.

Activate

Moisten the mix slowly and evenly.

The soil should feel like a well-squeezed sponge: moist, but not wet.

Avoid waterlogging and fully saturated areas.

Cover Crop & mulch

Sow the Cover Crop Mix evenly according to the recipe and water lightly.

Optionally cover the surface with mulch. Mulch protects against drying out, supports soil life and adds organic matter.

Let it rest

Let the finished Living Soil mix rest for 7–14 days if possible.

Check moisture regularly and lightly re-moisten if needed.

After this phase, the soil is ready for planting.

Planting

After the resting phase, the Living Soil mix can be planted.

For best results, dust the planting hole with Psycho Myco before placing the plant.

Set the plants in and water lightly.

Watering

Living Soil should be kept evenly moist. Avoid permanently wet soil as well as completely dried-out soil.

  • 80–150 mbar: ideal range
  • from approx. 160 mbar: water lightly
  • from approx. 200 mbar: water

A tensiometer helps maintain good conditions for plants, soil life and compost worms.

Compost worms recommended: They help break down organic matter, support soil life and improve soil structure over time.

Reactivate

Soil Recharger needs time so soil life can convert the organic nutrients it contains.

For best results, apply Soil Recharger as a top dress around 7 days before increased nutrient demand.

Gently move mulch aside, spread Soil Recharger evenly on the soil surface, replace the mulch and water lightly.

Recommended containers and planting densities

Recommended container size: Living Soil can also work in smaller containers. However, for a stable soil ecosystem, improved water retention and a long-term nutrient cycle, we recommend using larger containers or raised beds whenever possible. We recommend at least 20 gallons (approx. 76 L) as a starting point. For optimal results, use 30 gallons (114 L) or larger, or Grassroots Raised Beds.

The following recommendations are based on typical indoor Living Soil systems with short to medium vegetative time and an average plant height of about 60–100 cm.

  • 118 × 236 cm / approx. 1114 L: 18–50 plants

Fewer plants allow longer vegetative times and larger individual plants. Higher planting densities suit shorter vegetative times and more compact plants.
